High rise on the Esplanade

6 September 2024

Questa Heights, Upper Esplanade, St Kilda; it’s a big old high rise, but somehow you almost don’t notice it, maybe it’s the generous setbacks. Replacing an 1882 villa called Questa, it was built in 1963, and designed by prewar Jewish emigre architect Mordecai Benshemesh, who did the blocky cream brick flats I posted a few days ago a decade earlier.
He also did the more famous Edgewater Towers just before, in 1960 (pic 7) but I Iike this one more – lots of ins and outs, especially the thin concrete projecting balconies sticking out at the corners, the undersides painted blue (I’m sure it used to be brighter). Generous two/three beds and modest one beds, many with great views of course. One original kitchen in the real estate ads ! Not that it’s very exciting.
