St Moritz, St Kilda

St Moritz, St Kilda

5 September 2024

The St Moritz luxury apartments on the Upper Esplanade were finished middle of last year, and they’re quite speccy, almost unreal with the totally smooth curved concrete and glass.

Designed by @fenderkatsalidis, who also did the curvy apartments behind the Esplanade Hotel in 2007 (4th last pic). The development of three blocks (the square one in the inside corner gets views behind ?) is certainly better than the tacky Pomo Novotel there before, but I’m not sure if I actually like it.

Before the hotel (2nd last pic), part of the site was the St Moritz ice skating hall (last), built in 1922 as a dance hall, converted to an ice rink in 1939, and nice they resurrected the name. The developer was Tim Gurner, who had a two floor flat worth about $15mill, the top one worth a reported 30. First pics in sunshine, then some in fading light.

Rather extraordinary sculpture in front of the new St Moritz luxury flats on the Upper Esplanades, easily missed with the building as a back drop. It’s called the skater, inspired by the St Moritz Ice Rink once here, and it’s by Dean Colls and Louise Skacej, and I like that it’s faceted and also amazingly poised on one foot, with just a bit of ice for support, and smiling, I guess it’s a bit joyous 😊
