Concrete arches in Clarendon Street

Concrete arches in Clarendon Street

7 September 2024

Spotted this new thing in Clarendon Street, South Melbourne, thought it better than most, then discovered it’s by @sixdegreesarchitects, so perhaps that’s why. They’ve been doing arches for a while, and this one is in bold Brutalist concrete, complete with the marks of the wooden form work, like the 50s-60s original Brutalist stuff. It doesn’t exactly fit in with the mainly Victorian streetscape, but there’s a similar scale Edwardian industrial thing next door, so, almost. It also has coloured glass in little inserts in the windows; they used to do sort of FLW style leaded glass, but this is a different type (I’m told it’s by @nadinekeegan_ by my knowledgeable followers). I like the symmetrical formality, but the big services cupboard is the usual disappointment (and required by regs, the architects comment was that they couldn’t even put it on the side street !).
