Brick box mid century

Brick box mid century

22 September 2024

I took these photos of what I thought was some cute Deco or maybe 50s flats in Queensberry Street, North Melbourne in 2015, but thanks to the hyperlocal @housesofnorthandwestmelbourne I now know it was a house ! Built in 1962 for the Lamberti family, who had a music shop in Victoria Street, very popular with the postwar Italian community (I’m humming ‘Tintorella di Luna’). It was designed by Dutch immigrant architect Johannes Wallinga, in a rather retro style for that date, and it’s pretty much a box, but it’s great, with that stair tower, wrought iron gate and zigzag fence. Don’t know much else but he designed the nice also retro Frankston Uniting Church in 1958, last pic. More info : the top of the stair tower was a little lookout /balcony.
