Big polychrome wall

Big polychrome wall

30 September 2024

Denton Hat Mills, Nicholson Street, Abbotsford, a wonderful huge wall of late Victorian polychrome brick. Designed by the versatile and prolific William Pitt, seems built in stages, two storeys by 1883, three by 1888. Apparently rare as a clothing factory powered by steam, but I think steam was also/mainly used to shape felt ? Hot work, I think you get a hint in the 1883 ad. Still producing hats until 1971. Converted to apartments 2009, the one I found has borrowed light bedrooms, looks a bit tight, but tall lounge rooms. Photos 2013.
