Greening Guildford Lane

Greening Guildford Lane

8 October 2019

I poo-pooed the #greening of the city’s #laneways as unnecessary and maybe detracting from their gritty urban quality, but actually it’s quite nice, and it’s still gritty. This is #GuildfordLane, the once unknown now totally hip laneway off queen st.

Update 2024: The first 4 pics are recent, borrowed from Facebook, showing it quite lush now compared to the next two of mine from 2019. A recent review by the @cityofmelbourne of their pilot 2017 greening project of four lanes found that only this one has worked, because the occupants including residents look after it all, whereas in the others plants were stolen or just failed. The last photo is Meyers Place, which was meant to be greener, but only has the one vertical garden, which is very nice though. Meanwhile Guildford Lane has become surrounded by new #penciltowers, luckily the lane itself has had a 15m #heightcontrol since 1982. For a while it was discretionary, and a 7 storey development replacing the single storey black warehouses got approved, but never happened, phew !
