You’ve probably spotted this little Art Deco landmark from the Punt Road traffic, but it now looks very different from my 2019 pics – soon after that the classroom wing was replaced by a big black box. The Deco school was built in 1950, after a fire destroyed the 1877 one in 1946, and is an example of how public works chief Percy Everett carried on designing in his 1930s modes well after the war. The bit that’s left is the admin wing, with some nice porthole windows, but the whole entry effect is now different (and had already been altered), and its all a bit dominated, not to mention the car park and ugly fence. Also the windows are quite different too, and it’s all bloody B&W. This is despite heritage listing, but the education department is exempt. I feel like there must have been a better way, but no doubt it was all about budget. There’s also an Edwardian block of two classrooms that’s very attractive.
