Unitarian Church East Melbourne

Unitarian Church East Melbourne

27 December 2024

A bit of mid century mundane, the Unitarian Peace Memorial Church in Grey Street East Melbourne; built in 1965 it was designed by Erik & Grethe Kolle, 1st pic and info @chrismbr. I’m starting with that in order to work backwards – firstly, it looked better with the slate roofing, and from behind (as in pic 2 from Cross Section magazine), but still rather dull. Before this they were in Cathedral Place opposite St Pats in a nice but also unexciting church built in 1887, designed by Billings & Son. There’s very few pics of it around, so I include a blow up from an aerial from the 1920s. It looks like they only built the front half, but they built the lecture hall behind first, no that was it. Their website includes a blurry pic of the interior, with an interesting horseshoe balcony. Before that, they had a chapel from 1853, but the only pic is the sketch, no idea if built like that. So there’s some bits of Melbourne history that are still not easily found on line, however there is a written history, with a rather curious title !
