Art Nouveau in St Kilda

Art Nouveau in St Kilda

1 February 2025

A rather unusual but fun parapet detail on 6-8 Fawkner Street St Kilda, which I’m told dates from 1901 and was designed by Sydney Smith & Ogg – but they often used the famous Arts & Crafts designer and teacher Robert Haddon, who sold designs to other architects. The very Art Nouveau tulip motif in the front gable is quite like Milton House in Flinders Lane, always said to be Haddon, and the stepped gable is like Eastbourne House in Wellington Parade, and like another house pair in Grey Street St Kilda thought to be by him, so let’s say here’s another ! Though not quite as nice. I can’t show you what these houses are like inside because I couldn’t find any sake or rental ads, and they’re a bit hidden by high fences.
