Northcote original

91 Westbourne Grove, Northcote, in 1893 – I thought it was interesting because it shows that sometimes the cast iron lace was picked out in different colours. (Also, the fence is somehow much the same!). The shots were taken by keen amateur photographer Dr Thomas George Beckett, who lived here with his family, wife Kate, and children Nellie, Kathleen, Lawrence and George Jnr. They only lived here a few years, but there’s quite a few of them on the verandah or out back.

@museumsvictoria has a large collection of 3000 glass plate negatives that Dr Beckett took over the next 20 years, mainly of family, friends, and the various places he lived. This post was prompted by the ‘Melbourne Australia – 19th century for time travellers’ Facebook page, which has loads of photos of people posing in front of their houses.
