Trawalla

19 February 2021:

Not my photo but isn’t it nice ? Can’t see this view from the street though. For sale for $26mill (!). Trawalla in Lascelles Road Toorak was built in 1868, and enlarged 1885, both designed by #LeviPowell (2nd time as Powell & Whitaker). I assume the wonderful verandah is 1868, but not sure.

You used to be able to see it in all its grandeur but since it was last sold in 2004, a huge hedge has grown up. The grounds were subdivided in the 1930s, creating a curved street around the curved front, then it was boarding house, then home for the Nursing Association then for the College of General Practitioners. They sold it with plans for flats, with carparking under the lawn, fortunately didn’t happen.

The interior is very grabs indeed, with a double sized reception room, big stair hall, and a large billiard room.

Most pics real estate, 2nd from #heritagevictoria, third mine 2018.

Update : it was bought by Gary Singer / @smith_singer, who then went on the next year to buy Eildon mansion in St Kilda as the auction house, restored it a bit, then changed their minds, buying the smaller mansion, later a nursing home, Darnlee in Lansell Road Toorak instead, and Eildon still hasn’t sold.

  1. Oh wow! I never expected this Trawalla, Toorak mansion to pop up in your posts. The stained glass is by Ferguson & Urie in the late 1860’s and in this particular window the scenes depicted in the four seasons roundels are based on the same cartoons that David Relph Drape used in the stairwell window of the John Wilson “Woodlands” mansion about 20km north of Ararat. I was coincidentally only just at Woodlands last week to photograph the Woodlands stairwell window which is in remarkably good condition. As far as I know, no other publicised colour photos of the Woodlands window have ever been available on-line since copies of Prof Miles Lewis’ photos on 35mm slides in the late 80’s/90’s which is one of the portion photos on your post. – Ray
