Zigzag modern At Fairfield Hospital

2 March 2025

Repost 2021: The FG Scholes block at the former Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, 1949, one of the best things #PercyEverett ever did (and he did a lot). Always thought of it as the isolation ward, since it was a series of individual rooms with screened porches, but then the whole place was isolated wasn’t it? Established in a park about a mile from the main road in 1904, most of it is charming red brick Edwardian. After caring for the first wave of the HIV epidemic, the hospital was closed in 1996 – unused and decaying for ages, it was eventually handed over to Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE, who refurbished everything. The fly wire was replaced with glass, rather changing the look. And in another refurb, all that was retained of this wing in 2010 was the external walls it seems. (by @brand.architects.australia). Still, the exterior looks great. NMIT later became #MelbournePolytechnic. I havnt been since forever, so the pics are 1949, then 1990s, then the poly or the architects, last two mine from c1999 showing the flywire and the end bit.
