St Peter’s Eastern Hill

St Peter’s Eastern Hill

12 March 2015:

The front of St Peters Eastern Hill, built 1848, in simple, even simplistic, #gothicrevival in render over bricks, designed by #charleslaing. It faces away from the street, because it originally faced open space, looking towards Bourke Street in #colonialmelbourne before that space was chosen for parliament house in 1853. So now it’s rather hidden, and the front yard is used for parking. Still it’s a popular church, if youre #highanglican. The other thing I like a lot is that you can (or could) walk through a series of spaces created when the church hall was squeezed in on Gisbourne Street in 1913. Which takes you right around to see the bluestone transepts and chancel added in 1854 which face the street corner.

  1. St Peter’s has some original Ferguson & Urie stained glass from 1876. Most of the simple coloured bordered windows are original lancets by Ferguson & Urie. The gaudy Chancel still has F&U picture windows and is full of small bronze/gold tiles which looks reminiscent of a 1950’s home Bar or liquor cabinet. The original “Ascension” window has been relegated to a hole at the liturgical west end, and at the original east end it has been filled in like a sad “Rat” hole which is visible from the outside. Why this was done is not known. https://wp.me/p28nLD-1uc
