Art Nouveau bank

Art Nouveau bank

14 March 2014:

Former #ESandA #bank #nicholsonstreet #northcarlton. Built #1911, architect unknown. A bit #queenannestyle, a bit Romanesque, a bit #edwardianfreestyle, and loads of floral whiplash very Art Nouveau decoration, very unusual for a bank. Would have be mostly red brick under that paint. So the manager who lived upstairs and got that nice inset #verandah/#loggia.

Update : the heritage study just says it was ES&A, no evidence, and couldn’t find any others in the period. But the State Bank did do similar style branches, like the one in Swan Street by Billing & Son (pic Graeme Butler), or the one in Yarraville, by Sydney Smith & Ogg, (pic Facebook) but still, not exactly the same….

An Insta follower pointed me to a Carlton History Group newsletter that tells me it’s 1910, by Gibbs & Finlay.
