Early cottage by the beach

Early cottage by the beach

Some very pretty cast iron on one of the two cottages left on Alfred Square, St Kilda, which are surprisingly old. This one at No 1 is dated to at least 1855, when the earliest map of the area was drawn. It didn’t have a verandah then, but was there by 1873, so the lace could be 1860s ? Not so unusual to have wide and thin panels alternating, but these ones are particularly floral. It might have had French doors originally too, judging from the photos of the inside from a sale last year. Looks very livable 😊 if unaffordable. And the boarded bathroom might be an original / early room too, that wing is shown in the 1873 plan.
