Nomads, Carlisle Street, St Kilda, 2004. Even though this is so brightly coloured and blocky I kind of like it. I guess it helps a lot that the street is mixed and especially that there’s two palm trees in front. Also, it’s kind of just like a sculpture, with that almost blank wall, and angled cut out for the entrance. But if you look close you’ll see that the bright red backing on the glass is coming off. Adds texture I suppose ! Inside it’s like motel rooms or dorm rooms, with 238 beds (!), and there’s actually a larger rectangular plainer part facing the side street, with a gap between which is where they’ve put the bar/lounge. Possibly the first purpose built backpackers in St kilda. Don’t know architect, though Google AI says it was M2M (?!). Update : it’s possibly by Allan Powell.

David Brand’s influence.
