Tall corner store

Tall corner store

3 May 2025

A late post for World Art Deco Day (April 25th) – this was Normans Corner Store, cnr of Bourke and Russell Streets, one of the many smaller ‘department stores’ in the CBD. Norman’s opened here in 1932 in an Edwardian 3 storey thing, survived the depression, then in 1935 added 4 more floors, and refaced the earlier building, to a design by #marcusbarlow. Great spiky #skyline, all vertical piers, and some steppy bits up top.

Later it was Michael’s corner store, 5 floors of fabric, I went in once, each floor a different section. Great pics of the equally Art Deco shopfronts and walk-through display windows in 1943 from @library_vic. My pics 2014.

It was a Hungry Jacks but Google maps says closed ? Update yes it’s been closed for years, still empty.
