Sticking up in Little Bourke near Hardware is this warehouse built in 1889 for Jacob & Benjamin Marks, who were jewellers. It was designed by George De Lacy Evans in a rather unusual rendering of the Queen Anne style, with a big arch motif up top, bisected by the piers/windows, and topped by a big gable, in the end looking a bit c1900 Art Nouveau – all rather a lot for just a warehouse.
It would look so much better without the paint covering the brickwork. Evans also did the very nice warehouses round the corner in Niagara Lane, in polychrome brick.
This block became full floor apartments in 1994, and when the first floor sold in 2018, it had the original boring kitchen etc, and a rather surprising colourful Turkish room and courtyard out back !
