Sturdy Gothic

Sturdy Gothic

I was surprised to see that the church hall at St George’s CofE in Glenferrie Rd Malvern has a rather striking tower front, and given the date of 1891 it’s a bit avant garde, all red brick and simple details, looking almost 1920s. Originally it had a spire, making it even more prominent and churchy.

The architects were Flannagan & Foy, I assume that was Leonard J Flannagan, who had just started his career, best known for his various tram depots in the 1900-1910s including the nearby Malvern one, all in red brick too.

The nice slate roofed porch was added possibly in the 1920s, and the similar verandah on the side was added in the 1950s, very sensitive. Info from recent heritage review.
