Flat front flats

Flat front flats

Very striking block of flats in Inkerman Street, North Caulfield, built in 1937, called Linden.

Designed in horizontal streamlined mode, contrasted by vertical features marking the entries, which have fine stepped detailing. It may have been designed by the builder, TW Morris, and was originally going to be Tudor style. A short feature with a pic in Building Magazine in July 1938 noted ‘the kindly hand of nature has not as yet had time to provide that soft transition between building and ground.’ In other words it was pretty stark, and actually it still is.

This style normally has maybe banding of brick and render or inset speed lines, or more projecting details, but it’s all flat light painted render (though originally the window frames were a different colour). There were lights above the entries, now gone. The flats look quite spacious, with a dining room opening into a lounge.
