Catholic Ladies College

Catholic Ladies College

February 2026

This great bit of very busy Gothic Revival once stood in Cathedral Place, East Melbourne. These are the only pics I could find of it.

Im pretty sure this was the convent for the Sisters of Charity who started the Catholic Ladies College in a converted building facing onto St Andrew’s Place behind in 1902. I can’t find when the convent was built exactly, maybe 1907, and in 1917 they started to hold fetes and garden parties to retire the ‘onerous’ debt.

The college left for Eltham in 1971, where it’s still going. I think the site was largely demolished soon after, and remained vacant until the Park Hyatt was built in the 1990s.

Early 1930s
