Original post 1 December 2018: In Montague Street, #AlbertPark, there’s a set of great, elaborate #Victorian terraces; in fact there’s two blocks of them exactly the same, one a row of 8, the other 10. They're mostly intact (though two seem to have had the parapets replaced with gabled roofs), but many urns have disappeared, … Continue reading Albert Park Victorian
Victorian Victoria no. 25
Victorian crinkly bits; these #terraces in #AlbertPark are all the same, but each has its own #wingwalls, for that extra level of elaboration. Hmm not wing walls, maybe party walls ?
Fritsch and Prenzel : Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middle Park, 1928.
#OurLadyofMountCarmel, completed 1928, rearing up in the middle of #MiddlePark; surprisingly for a quiet suburb it replaced a church that was already pretty big (maybe it was bigger families ? Or because it’s home for the #Carmelites ?) anyway it’s by #AugustusFritsch who did about a dozen impressive churches pretty much all in a similar … Continue reading Fritsch and Prenzel : Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middle Park, 1928.
The Canterbury St Kilda : early flats, high rise to boot !
2020 : The Canterbury, on Canterbury Rd, #StKilda, weirdly tall and skinny, built 1914, amongst the first wave of flats built in Melbourne, when still at the experimental (for Melbourne) early stage. This was built like 3 single storey terrace houses on top of each other, though it’s a tiny site, smaller than the average … Continue reading The Canterbury St Kilda : early flats, high rise to boot !
Biggest mosaic ever ! History of Geelong, Harold Freedman, 1980, Geelong State Offices.
You can tell this was made in the 1970s - the last part is ‘#ComputerAge’ 😁. It’s the huge #mosaic ‘#HistoryofGeelong’ that runs the whole length of the foyer of the #GeelongStateOffices, made 1977-80 by state artist #HaroldFreedman. I seem to have photographed the ladies that feature, like the bikini girl, the 30s dancer and … Continue reading Biggest mosaic ever ! Big old office building, National Bank, Geelong, 1928
I like it, nice detailing, but I think it’s rather #topheavy, the way the lower levels are inset behind the #faience #ioniccolumns. #NationalBankofAustralasia, #MalopStreet, #Geelong, completed Jan 1928, designed by #TompkinsandTompkins from Melbourne, squeezing it in with all their other work! Chamber us intact too, though you can hardly see the columns through the clutter.
Cage lift, Geelong.
So exciting ! Went looking in #Geelong for interwar lobbies/interiors, pushed open the very closed looking side door to the 1928 National Bank, and found an operating #cagelift ! Very smooth action. No lobby to speak of though. But lots of #grillage, and in mid century grey-green. Apparently it’s residential upstairs.
Prefabricated Cast Iron Store, Geelong West, a symphony in brown.
This fine building on Mercer Street #Geelong was rescued from near collapse a few years ago- and just as well, cos it’s a very unusual #GoldRush #prefabricated #castiron and #corrugatediron building made by Glasgow firm Robertson & Lister in 1853. It was erected here the next year, as Brown Brothers Store. I see they reproduced … Continue reading Prefabricated Cast Iron Store, Geelong West, a symphony in brown.
T & G Building, Geelong, 1934, A&K Henderson go Art Deco
The best older building in Geelong ? The great #TandGbuilding, one of the nearly 20 small-to-large T & G buildings dotted around Australia and NZ, all built 1924-1940, many with distinctive stepped towers, (almost) all designed by #AandKHenderson, the Geelong one was their first foray into #ArtDeco, and remarkably built pretty much during the #GreatDepression, … Continue reading T & G Building, Geelong, 1934, A&K Henderson go Art Deco
Gordon Tech, 1887, Scots Jacobean in Geelong
28 November 2018 The impressive and unusually detailed original buildings of the #GordonTechnicalCollege in #Geelong. Looks like all one piece but actually three stages - far left by #AlexanderDavidson in a rather special ‘#ScotsJacobeanRevival’ was the first building of the college in 1887; the middle bit by another architect, EM Blake, similar but not as … Continue reading Gordon Tech, 1887, Scots Jacobean in Geelong
