Modernist Church, East Melbourne

Modernist Church, East Melbourne

14 May 2024

On Hotham Street East Melbourne rather unexpectedly there’s a modernist ex church. Built for the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, for those from Northern Europe, such as Latvians and Estonians (who were in the first wave of postwar migrants, drawn mainly from the Baltic states). Designed by Godfrey Spowers Hughes Mewton & Lobb in a jaunty style with angled walls and a porthole window, when it opened in Dec 1953 it was one of the first modernist churches in Victoria. It’s been a house since 1993, when they actually took the roof off the front half to create a courtyard garden (I got pic when the door was open), and stuck a garage door in as well, which seems to belong actually if you didn’t know what it was like before. There’s a sculpture out front too, looks like it should mean something.
