Majestic Mansions, Fitzroy Street, St Kilda – glamorous flats for 1913.

Built as #MajesticMansions in 1913, this was a very early #blockofflats, though they only had ‘appliances for simple cooking’, with a central dining room for everyone, so not exactly like modern apartments. Built and designed by builder/developer #JRDaley, right after he did the Waldorf next door, and soon after did the Regal on the other side. He also owned Broklawn further down (known as the French Embassy) as well as 78 houses in Elwood ! His son took over in the 30s and modernised the front (looks worse!). Abandoned in 1989, I went through with a friend and took the interior photos now in the files of the #NationalTrust, and reproduced in a new book on the building by David Willis. In 1983 after a big fire the rear 2/3 demolished and replaced by the low rise #MajesticApartments. Don’t know what if anything is left of the interiors.
