Most unfortunate- the lobby of #HarryNorris’s 1938 #CarlowHouse was given a make-over about 10 years ago, and I happen to have had a photo from just before. The owners obviously wanted something ‘light and bright’ and a bit more upmarket than the dull old #terrazzo floors and walls and #chromiumsteel display cabinets, but maybe a bit of paint would have done the trick ??
Though I see they also made an opening into a shop, so they could have some tables either side, and presumably have a bit more rent. Sad. They did keep the lift indicators, and appear to have added the curious lift door guards. The exterior of the building, with its wonderful squared Art Deco look, with a simpler Streamlined rear, has been protected since the early 1980s. But the City of Melbourne has avoided protecting any notable interiors that arnt already on the Heritage Register.
