The #SirCharlesHotham hotel has seen better days. Designed by #WilliamPitt, one of his last designs, built 1913, it’s looked like this for 30 years at least. But that means it’s never been upgraded inside, as far as I can see it’s pretty well all original (except the corner bar), but I couldn’t actually get in – the corridor shot comes from someone else – and I think that’s the original (disused) lift at the far end of the entry. If anyone has more photos inside, let me know !

The things you find in open doors – as far as I can work out this was the entrance to the residential part of the Lord Clyde Hotel in Flinders Street, built perhaps the same time as, or soon after, the #SirCharlesHotham, designed by #WilliamPitt in about 1910, built 1912-13; they look like one single building. This entry is blocked off now, used as a rather grand laundry for #NomadsAllNations #backpackers.

Some good news – instead of the approved tower addition, the Charles Hotham Hotel on the corner of Spencer & Flinders is to be restored, unchanged, and become a hostel again (I think). They’re going to restore the facade, taking the paint off the red bricks, fixing up the woodwork, it’ll look great ! If you search for City Melb planning applications, then 2-8 Spencer street you should find it, and you can support ! Hers done close ups, mostly mine.
