Ancient Order of Foresters, RMIT

Ancient Order of Foresters, RMIT

Original post 3 July 2015:

The facade of the 1888 Foresters’ Hall on Latrobe Street, architects Ravenscroft & Freeman. Long owned by RMIT, and long heritage protected, the once all-brown facade has just been restored and revealed in a bright new colour scheme ! Not original judging from the old photo, but looks great. The coloured bits appear to be a couple of jaunty Foresters up the top, with a shield depicting a handshake, a leaping deer, a hunting horn and arrows in quiver, probably something to do with feeding the poor. The Ancient Order of Foresters was one of the many 19thC Friendly Societies, which operated as kind of insurance clubs for the less well off. Just a pity about the #poorlyplacedtree.

Rather stylish #balusters inside the 1888 #AncientOrderOfForesters building at #RMIT; I thought it was basically just a facade but there’s a great spacious stair, and a door, no hall anymore though. Any guesses what the UMD stands for anyone ? It’s ‘United Melbourne District’ – thanks @jdflemington
