Stalbridge Chambers, 1891

Repost 2019: #StalbridgeChambers, 1891, by #TwentymanabdAskew, another one of #myfavouritebuilding’s. At nine floors, it’s one of the two remaining 19thC skyscrapers in Melbourne (the other is the gothic #NationalMutual, Queen & Collins). Love the way every floor is subtly different, something they also did on #TheBlockArcade, and #FinksBuilding (demolished). It was offices, but also a hotel, with bar (entry?) on the ground floor, now the Syracuse Restaurant, and rooms in the top floor (the teeny windows right on top?). The lobby is partly intact too.

I do like the way the classical pile-up of #StalbridgeChambers in #LittleCollinsStreet dominates this view down #NewChanceryLane, created by the #RACVclub in 2005 (though for a lane it’s a bit too wide). Designed by #TwentymanandAskew, built 1891, Stalbridge is one of only two of the dozen #VictorianSkyscrapers in Melb to survive. The other is the former National Mutual cnr Collins and Queen.

5 March 2024:

Yes that lane was unnecessarily wide and long, it’s only a carpark entry, as well as I guess getting light into the tower, but the club realised they could do more with it, and in 2021 they put a blue box over one end – it’s an eatery (with a ‘rooftop bar’) called Sojourn. Now spoils the view down that lane. Not even a particularly nice box.
