The Anglican Mission To The Streets And Lanes in Spring Street was treated much better than the #ElmsFamilyHotel by the @australianunity office thing; they just took out a back corner (a kitchen) and kept the rest of it more or less intact, though I didn’t get to see the upper floors this time where the nuns once lived. I did see that floor and the rear kitch back in 2016, last 3 pics, and the first pic is also from then, because cars. Designed by Bates Peebles & Smart in a sort of Arts & Crafts Gothic style, it was built in 1913 around an 1870s dance hall (where ‘single women’ used to hang around). It got a conc roof in 1913 so they could put a chapel on top, so just the walls were left. The sisters left in 1958 after it was compulsorily acquired by the Commonwealth, and it was then used by the BOM. After it was bought by the super fund in 2004, it became a Greek Orthodox Church. Nice to see the stair is definitely still there, despite not meeting any kind of codes ! Last pic by Graeme Butler via FB showing how the new tower is set back but cantilevers over.
