Armadale Theatre, 1912

This place on #HighStreetArmadale doesn’t look like much, but the wide front with an arch and simple detailing were clues that it might be an old cinema – which it is, in fact one of the oldest purpose built cinemas that’s still somewhat intact. The #ArmadaleTheatre opened in August 1912, finally closing during WW2, then it was light industry, a ski school (!), a few other things till it became Sotheby’s in 2003. Lately it’s furniture, and the typical simple arched ceiling is mostly still there, complete with vents.

When it was vacant – that might be the proscenium, and I guess the skylight is relatively recent.

From my Instagram post :

tum.lare_melbourne : Bruce Bretherton’s Vaydln Ski School. This featured a large artificial slope of plastic bristle matting resembling giant toothbrushes on a sloped platform from proscenium down to foyer. I think Vaydlin is like weaving
