Elwood Surf Club Pavilion, 1971

Elwood Surf Club Pavilion, 1971

Original post 24 March 2021:

A bit of beach-side #Brutalism, the #ElwoodSurfClub pavilion at #ElwoodBeach. Built in 1971, it was designed by #DonFulton, who had done some great houses in the 50s-60s, and the excellent BP admin building at #CribPoint in 1965. It replaced the 1928 changing pavilion (just like the one on St Kilda Beach), and the Edwardian surf club that was further south down the beach. It’s heritage listed now, though altered, with a second level for the club, windows inserted and a restaurant added at one end (a photo shows it blurry but unaltered in the 70s).

Update 2024: The beach actually has a lot of facilities, a big jaunty shed for the sailing club, a little one for the sea scouts, one from maybe the 60s for the Anglers Club (as in the postcard from the 50s maybe), and there’s another cafe in what was a bowls club I think (pic 10), and a tennis club too. A ‘climate adaptation plan’ that @cityofportphillip approved last year would see them all rearranged, with the parking further back from the beach, a new surf club and restaurant further south, and the 1971 building turned into a open pavilion, which would be rather nice.
