Eastbourne House, 1903, Robert Haddon (probably)

EastbourneHouse, #EastMelbourne, built 1901-3 for Dr Peacock, with professional offices and two attached #terracehouses. The architects are listed as #SydneySmithAndOgg, but this is widely assumed to actually be by #RobertHaddon, who consulted for them and others – and it isn’t like their work at all, but does have a variety of elements considered to be Haddon hallmarks, like #ArtNouveau #wroughtiron, plain #redbrick walls with occasional flourishes, eclectic sources and inventive details. Dr Peacock was famously prosecuted in 1911 for causing a death of Mary Davies by performing an abortion but her body was never found and he was acquitted after 3 trials. 25 May 2024:

The balanced asymmetry of the south face of Eastbourne House. A composition of plain #redbrick contrasted with delicate elements featuring #artnouveau and #wroughtiron, and a rather weird corner #turret. Exterior barely been touched.

Nice newel post inside.

More evidence of Haddon’s involvement are the terracotta flower-like panels, similar to those on Milton House in Flinders Lane, also thought to be by him.
