Mid century in a city lane

Mid century in a city lane

10 September 2019 :

The delightful #SapphireHouse, in #CrossleyStreet. Not protected until 2016 when #BourkeHill #heritageprecinct was reviewed. Built 1957 for the #Hurwitz family jewellers and traders, with the ground floor rented to Pellegrinis until the 90s as a larger (more expensive) serve yourself affair. The building hasn’t changed, entry looks original too, including #terrazzo, timber and the lights ! Great #doorknob, depicting the tools of the jewellery trade. Architect not known, though if anyone knows the Hurwitz’s, ask them !

Update September 2024

B&W pic @library_vic of the site just before construction, with a sign to ask Hurwitz if you want to park there. The ground floor was rented early on to Pellegrinis as a larger (more expensive) serve yourself affair. In 1996 it became Becco, quite popular I’m told, only went once myself, just announced it will close, to make way for something by Andrew McConnell.
