Ulimaroa, St Kilda Road

Ulimaroa, St Kilda Road

Repost this day 2018:

Repost 2018: Ulimaroa, another nice #StKildaRoadMansion, built 1890, attributed to JAB Koch ‘on stylistic grounds’, but might have been by #LeonardJFlannagan. Your typical towered Victorian mansion with return cast iron verandah, but with an extra set of bay windows, and a bit more detailing than most, like the nice cast iron balconettes. Fun facts : The name was made up by a Swedish geographer in 1776 for Australia, based on what he thought the Maori called it; it was occupied from 1890 to 1946 by the Traill family who ran shipping co #HuddartParker; then from 1960 it was hq for #REPCO, and they added some Blackwood doors and panelling rescued from the demolished Goathlands in Kew. Since 1993, it’s been home for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), with a small tower to the rear designed by Norman Day, while the mansion now houses the Geoffrey Kaye Museum of Anaesthetic History, which helpfully has a 3D tour, so you can get an idea of the grand but not elaborate interior.
