#CastIronStreetLamp, #WilliamStreetMelbourne, erected 1929/30, one of only 2 left of dozens that once lined the streets of the #MelbCBD. The other is across the road down the hill. Don’t know why these two remained while all the others were replaced in the 1960s with modern street lamps. Many ended up in the gardens of big houses in Toorak and Brighton or outside public buildings – and I thought Bathurst too, but no they were installed in the 1930s, maybe they ordered from us ? Bought the design ? Which in turn is very similar to some street lamps in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Old photos all from Jack Cato’s Melbourne Portrait, 1949.
