August 2017:
The #AustralianClub, the other great #mensclub after the Melbourne Club, built for the businessmen and squatters whose offices and storehouses were at this end of town. The main part was built in 1879 designed by #LloydTayler, extended to the lane behind in 1884. Then in 1890 they decided to enlarge it with four bays to the right, designed by J Charlesworth, replicating the facade details but a bit squeezed up. He added the almost central entry, portico, huge stair hall, and the enormous salon/dining room. Completed 1893 just as the Victorian economy crashed to a nadir.
Has great #vermiculation, and an ‘area’ lighting the basement. Interiors various sources, very grand indeed, including a room with painted panels by famed flower artist #EllisRowan.
