Moderne in Collins Street

7 September 2018:

Def one of my fave city buildings. Former #StateAccidentInsurance office, 1941, #PercyEverett, #publicworksdepartment chief architect showing his creativity again in his only ‘commercial’ office building. Quite a contrast to his other tower, the New York skyscraper style #russellstreetpolicestation done at the same time. It’s a careful balance of competing #horizontal and #verticals, plus a lovely inward curve. Now called #CollinsHillHouse, 412 #CollinsStreet. I had thought the entry / shopfront was original, but no it’s maybe 1980s, but quite sympathetic.

Note I didn’t photograph the old entry door that’s now plastered with Taco Bell signs. Nice shots showing it in 1971 and also 1941 from @library_vic. Only thing original in the lobby is the stair, pic by Graeme Butler. Hmm second thoughts might not original since the original door must have has steps up to the mezzanine, or went through at ground level to the lift lobby.
