B’nai B’rith, East St Kilda

Repost 2019:

The #BnaiBrith in #HothamRoad, #EastStKilda, built in 1959, is a joint design by Ernest Fooks and Kurt Popper who both did a number of buildings for the Jewish community. At first I thought this was synagogue but it’s actually meeting rooms, B’nai Brith being a social and advocacy organisation, who have moved nearby. Actually it’s just a smallish modern section built in the front of a Victorian villa – a bit concerned to see it boarded up – but it’s #heritagelisted, and now the villa (also listed) is to be replaced by new apartments, and units in the Fooks section by @neilarchitecture. 2021: went past a few weeks ago, think they’ve started.

My review now that it’s finished : Annoyed everything is painted fashionable dark grey (it was two tone before), and the fence is the same colour, with a not very sympathetic curve. At least it’s a bit more open at ground level, like it was originally (pic 5) though it got a cream brick fence at some point (pic 4), which was nicer. Last two pics are the front unit, fits in well. Theres a gravelled area in front, either havnt finished the landscaping, or that’s a car space. I quite like the scalloped fronts to the townhouses.
