NGV Contemporary

15 March 2022

The design for the NGV Contemporary on Southbank has been released, and I really like it! I think the architect Angelo Candelapas is doing things nobody else is doing – a kind of very refined Brutalism that ends up beautiful. Almost all his work is in Sydney so far. I like very much the spherical atrium too, even though it’s a bit Guggenheim, and perhaps a bit too much like a shrine, complete with Kaws offering up a body (I’m not a fan of kaws). However I wish it was going on Fed Sq East, even though it would cost twice as much to deck over the rail lines, but we’d end up with a lot of park land as well.

Update : looking at Candalepas’ work, I can se all these elements in other projects- but I still like it.
