Royal Melbourne Hospital

7 October 2022

The Premier announced that when they build a new Royal Melbourne Hospital, and a new Womens, in Arden, that the old one would be demolished – but in the middle of an awful lot of additions, the original 1941 building is reasonably intact. It was the biggest most modern hospital in Victoria at the time, designed by hospital experts #StephensonAndTurner. It was also seen as dramatically Modernist, with no decoration, just a lot of sweeping balconies (on the rear/north), but also a vertical tower aligned with the Elizabeth Street axis. Worthy of preservation somehow I think, but old hospitals hard to reuse as new ones. First image from a book on the architects, other images State Library Victoria or National Library, last one mine from 2015.
