Rosenberg’s Shoes, 65 Chapel Street Windsor

Original post 23 February 2018:

Rosenberg’s Shoes, probably one of the oldest businesses in the same shop in Melbourne (and oldest altogether, starting in 1903, though the 1894 Hopetoun Tearooms is older, current location from 1907), and definitely one of the prettiest most delightful #shopwindows in Melbourne. They’re now into the fourth generation running the shop, which has specialised in larger sizes or unusual shapes for a long long time. They’ve been here in Chapel Street since at least 1915, the earliest newspaper ref I could find. There Edwardian era building is protected as part of the Chapel Street heritage precinct, and the shopfront is specifically mentioned, but there’s no historical detail as to when it was built. It looks perhaps 1910s, but could be as late as the 30s, while the signage could even be 50s.

Update : Stuart Rosenberg announced that store would be closing in July 2024, because since Covid, brands began selling larger sizes on line.
