5 April 2017:
(#rant warning). The #StateLibraryVictoria looking splendid in the 3pm sun in early April – but not for long ! The #ScapeSwanston #studenthousing now going up diagonally opposite will be casting a shadow exactly where that tree shadow on the left is, up to and over the #portico. Swipe to see it at about 15 out of it’s 40 floors (it’s by #DCMArchitects, a return to their 80s grids, but without the fine detailing). And once the #MelbourneMetro is done, the site next door will have another tower just as tall, and the 90 storey #AuroraMelbourneCentral will be adding yet more width to the shadow. A case of planning playing catch up, or rather not – the state library lawn is protected from overshadowing but only between 11am and 2pm, a control from the 80s, well before the lawn became chocablock with students and residents of nearby towers at all hours. I guess they’ll all just go home when the lawn is in shadow on cooler afternoons most of the year. @ State Library of Victoria

I’d reinstate the iron railing fence and gates to define the space in front. Of course, now that would be declaimed as elitist or some such garbage but if only for aesthetic reasons I think it would look marvellous and elegant (as it once did.) And if electrified you could keep the riff riff out which would be an added bonus.
