Flats that look like something else …

Flats that look like something else …

18 May 2023:

Amazing place – happened to pass this a few weeks ago, at 23 Seymour Road, Elsternwick, and recognised it from ages ago – it was identified in a @cityofgleneira study from 2019, which tells me it was designed by Harold Shafer, and built in 1973. The very unusual street front has tall thin windows with surrounds that stick way up, and way out along radial lines, adding a bit of a curve, and making it look like something other than flats. It’s also an unusual type, with split level 3 bed units, 4 above, 4 below, all facing west, with a pedestrian entry and open space on that side, with an angled planter bed for the upper units so they don’t look down on the lower ones, and parking at a lower level on the other side. A great idea, but I don’t know if it was ever repeated. Now one of the relatively few post war places heritage listed by Glen Eira. Plans from the study, and rear and interiors from real estate sites.

  1. I was fascinated by this building when I happened upon it, so different to everything else in Elsternwick. Nice to know a bit more about it.
