Elwood Fire Station

Elwood Fire Station

Elwood #FireStation, opened 1927. I read that it was on Brighton Road but hidden behind flats, and only the other day I finally saw it. Very odd, built at an angle, half facing the flats built for some of the firemen out front. Why didn’t it face the main road, with the flats, built behind ? Did they drive through the arch at the front ? Anyway, very nice, in a kind of Mediterranean-Georgian; the heritage study says ‘architect unknown’ but since it’s similar to the other 1920s fire stations which were designed by #CedricBallantyne (best known for the Regent Theatre), I’d say it was him. In 1989 instead of just being sold off, it was sold (at a discount I hope) to community housing, which it still is. What a good idea !

  1. Beautiful building! Closed in 1989, when a review saw the closure of this and other stations between 1983 & 1993. Brighton fire station closed at the same time and Glen Huntly a year before this. Was officially known as St. Kilda Fire Station No.37 and the number has not been reused since. There’s also another old fire station in nearby Elsternwick.
