Bourke Street, quite old

Bourke Street, quite old

Original post 30 December 2020 (photo 2017) :

This charming survivor is on #BourkeStreet, just up from #HardwareLane and turns out to be quite old, almost #goldrush, built in 1858. It’s one of the many scattered pre WW2 places proposed in the #HoddleGridHeritageReview – which found it was built as offices for early entrepreneur #HughGlass, who bought up lots here in 1847-8. The ground level was altered to a shop in c1925, and was mostly cafe /restaurants; it was the Midway Cafe, from at least 1948 (2nd photo), still there on the 60s. The photo shows the separate entrance to upstairs, still there. Found some real estate photos of inside – could that door be original Victorian? The skylight probably is. The building sold in Dec last year, and it’s currently painted dark grey (yuk).
