Some more #LostMelbourne – this was the Presbyterian Chalmers Church in #EastMelbourne on St Andrews Place, behind #TasmaTerrace – which turns out to have been demolished a looong time ago, in 1905 ! I had seen this photo ages ago and assumed it was lost more recently. The manse survived until the 90s, but it wasn’t much to look at. The Church was built way back in 1855, designed by David Ross, a very plain example of #GothicRevival, suitable for the congregation that worshipped here, in rivalry it seems with Scots Church in Collins Street. This church was associated with #ScotchCollege, which was originally right next door, which later became St Andrews Hospital. The church was ministered by the well known Rev Dr Adam Cairns from its beginning until his death in 1881. Soon after, the congregation split, with some building the (much bigger) Cairns Memorial Church across the park in East Melbourne, the remaining congregation dwindled rapidly and the site was sold in 1898. Not sure what replaced it, there’s things there in the c1920 image, I think it was part of the Catholic Ladies College, built 1902, and which faced the other street.
