East Melbourne mini mansion

East Melbourne mini mansion

9 April 2024

Delightful villa at 17 Powlett Street, East Melbourne; used to be mostly hidden behind plants, now you can admire the sweeping lawn and the delicate detailing. It’s an 1869 rebuild of an earlier house, and thought to be designed by prolific architects Crouch & Wilson. Last pic is @cityofmelbourne photo from 2001, showing that the verandah has been restored since then. It’s sold twice recently, in 2021, and late last year.

  1. Crouch & Wilson always pricks my ears up. The vast majority of their buildings have Ferguson & Urie Stained glass 1863-1899 period, but that bluish looking window above the stairwell doesn’t seem to fit the bill even from that extreme faint angle. More info to look into on that interesting one. These private buildings are full of magnificent historical surprises.
