Moorish Tudor on the beach

Moorish Tudor on the beach

A bit of a local landmark, Arden sits at the beginning of Marine Parade, opposite Luna Park, and looks a bit exotic too. Originally a pair of Victorian terraces, it was given a makeover in 1934, designed by HV Gillespie in something that’s rather Tudor, or perhaps Moorish, but also rather flat, and with an odd variety of arches. Gillespie did the conversion of the Windsor Court flats in Robe St 15 years earlier.

I always thought this was flats, and then in the 80s there was some major change, but they’re both houses now….. ok, I found ads from 1935 for ‘Unfurn Bal Flat 5 r, sun porch’ for both 1 and 2 Marine Parade.

A 2021 sale ad for no 2 shows the plan, and upstairs it’s been opened out into the balcony, now permanently glazed in, which rather spoils the look.

  1. Gosh…the epitome of the cardboardiness of St Kilda’s built form…has to be one of the worst facade compositions I’ve seen…hard to believe it was the work of a registered architect
