22 January 2014:
The rather wonderful Tomasetti Building in Flinders Lane near Elizabeth, designed by the prolific Tompkins & Tompkins in 1908 in the popular Edwardian #redbrick tall arched style, but with a touch of the Moorish in the keyhole arches and general stripeyness. It was the result of an extra floor and new facade by #tompkinsandtompkins. Designed for Borsdorff & Co (corsets), it was a rebuild of a big 1853 warehouse, whose bluestone walls are still visible down Lingham Lane. Pic 3 borrowed from Stephen McLaughlan, 2023.

Posted only last year but posting again because now I can see what’s happening inside – this is Tomasetti House in Flinders Lane near Elizabeth, bought by Justin Hemmes in 2020 (for 43mill !), only now well underway to become a five floor hospo thing, with base and top floor bars and 3 floors of Chinese restaurant between.
There’s a video of him touring it 5 months ago, which shows that unlike similar ventures eg Balthard, he didn’t completely gut to four walls, but made holes and put in new skinny columns to support the existing historic floor structure, with its concrete encased steel beams and mass concrete floors over arched corr iron panels. Much of that will be exposed I think.
