Eclectic interwar

Eclectic interwar

Some flats on High Street Armadale that stood out in the winter sun – Koonoona, cnr Hampden Road, was built in 1933, and architect M Sherlock was quite eclectic.

There’s a more or less Art Deco arch, Georgian wrought iron, a classical portico, some Spanish barleycorn columns, and loads of textured clinker brick walls, fence and paving. The lobbies also have great random but square patterned tiles.

There’s 8 flats I think, with no 5 upstairs on the side having an excellent mostly original bathroom. Listed Significant by @stonningtoncitycouncil.

This block on the corner of Wattletree and Burke Roads Malvern is very similar stylistically, in fact the geometric panels between the windows and the corners of the openings are exactly the same, and there’s also the unusual top course of clinker brick, and general style – but it’s by designer /builder LG Broadbent, c1930. So either he also built the one above, or the architect copied this one, which is unlikely.

  1. It is a wonderful apartment block. In the 1980s I was passing by on a tram when a man ran out of the building, right in front of the tram and was killed. I felt so bad for the tram driver, and of course the victim.
